July 4th Grilled "Boomin'" Onion

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Here's a fantastic 4th of July appetizer idea! If you love those deep fried bloomin' onions you can get at some restaurants, but don't want all the breading and fat, this is for you!! I grilled these delicious Vidalia onions with a little seasoning and BOOM! these were amazing! In fact, we liked this better than the fried version because these have all the yummy flavor without all the grease.....you can actually enjoy the taste of the onion better. Not to mention....they look like an exploding July 4th firework! Cute and delicious! I didn't even need a dip for it myself, but my family loved to dip it in remoulade sauce ( I buy Louisiana brand). You can find it near the seafood seasonings at the store. Try this soon while you can get some wonderful Vidalia onions that are in season!

Here's what you need:

Large Vidalia onions ( however many you want to prepare)

Steak or burger seasoning to taste

Paprika to taste

Salt to taste

Olive oil spray

Cut the onions top off but LEAVE THE ROOT BOTTOM IN TACT!! if you cut through the root, the onion will fall apart. Peel the onion, again being sure to leave the root in tact.

Cut the onion in fourths, cutting deep into the onion, but don't cut through the root!

Lastly, cut each fourth into thirds,so you have several wedges in the onion and it will open up.

Spray the onion with olive oil spray to coat well. Sprinkle on your favorite grill seasoning, then a little paprika for color and a little salt to taste.

Preheat the grill to 350. Grill the onions directly on the grill at 350 for 45 minutes, keeping the grill closed.

Carefully remove the onions with a spatula. It is ready to serve! You and your guests can just tear off pieces and enjoy!
